I couldn't agree more with Satya (http://spmallick.blogspot.com/2006/09/vande-mataram.html). But the question that we all really need to ask ourselves is- is it wise to stay away from controversies? Isn't it time that we got involved?
{Does that makes it two questions? Or is it one only? Yes, you can figure it out and let me know. Meanwhile read on}
Those who can sing. Those who can't- they keep mum.
{Like me. You heard it. No Jan Gana Mana either because I'm so hopelessly out of tune. I could try the gun salute though. But does that count?}
Now for those who want to sing the national song please do so because you can sing and maybe because you want to sing a song we all decided to call 'national' when we decided how this country was to be governed {or screwed}. If singing Vande Matram makes you feel proud of your country? You lucky dog! Nobody's stopping you.
And those who don't want to sing because they are from my Tone Deaf Club. God bless you! Don't sing it please. Don't sing anything. And don't sing it for such other 'personal' reasons.
But to sing Vande Matram because it is a test of patriotism! Oh please who are you kidding? And refusing to sing it because your fickle, narrow minded and backward religious/sectarian leader/teacher is telling you not to! What are you thinking? Thats where the sting of this entire controversy is. Its about time we told them.
Religion is like shit. Its best done at home and not in public.

Agree....Religion is best kept at home. There is no need for huge speakers blaring religious music.
Patriotism is a whole different thing. The reason that our freedom fighters sung this was for unity. Today we are divided based on region, religion, caste and creed.
There's nothing wrong with Jana Gana Mana. And singing both Jana Gana and Vande Mataram, makes me feel proud of my country. And I understand Sanskrit and helps me understand Vande Mataram better. :)

Dear Satya,
I respect your take on the issue. But your views address only one of the many aspects. In reality, there is problem at hand that can blow up to any proportion if not handled tactfully. The educated progressive minds are a single digit minority in India. If we want the country as a whole to prosper and progress, we will need to address the concerns of the vast emotional majority even if they do not make any sense for the thinking minds.
Any social and sensitive issue of this kind requires careful attention and resolution. As a nation we need to rise together if we aspire to topple the Chinese and catch up with Europeans and Americans.
We should never underestimate the potential of a neglected spark.
Does this controversy deserve so much of attention?
Maybe I don't know. But I view this as a spark that should not be neglected.
